DJ Ajax Wipe n' Spray's Big Gay Guide to Melbourne

The Laird

149 Gipps Street, Abbotsford VIC 3067

A Legendary Venue with a Rich History

Originally built in 1847 as the Laird O'Cockpen Hotel, this historic venue has seen it all – from hosting Melbourne’s early local community to becoming a hub for the city’s gay men. In 1980, it was transformed into a dedicated gay bar, providing a safe and welcoming space for those who preferred a traditional pub atmosphere over nightclubs.

Throughout the years, The Laird has been home to Melbourne’s leather and bear communities, hosting events like the annual Men on Men Art Competition, VicBears’ Southern HiBearnation, and the Northside Bizarre. In 1998, the venue was officially recognised as a male-only space by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), reinforcing its commitment to providing a social hub for gay men.

Events and Community at The Laird

The Laird is not just a pub—it’s a cornerstone of Melbourne’s gay community. Whether you're into leather, bears, or just looking for a laid-back atmosphere to meet new people, there’s always something happening. The venue hosts a variety of community-driven events, including:

  • Vic Leather Open Day (May) – A gathering of the local leather and kink community.
  • Men on Men Open Day (June) – Showcasing artwork and culture from Melbourne’s queer artists.
  • Northside Bizarre (October) – A fun and wild fundraiser supporting LGBTQ+ causes.
  • Southern HiBearnation – A week-long celebration for the bear community.

As Melbourne’s only dedicated gay men’s bar, The Laird is a must-visit spot for those who appreciate a space with character, community, and a deep connection to LGBTQ+ history.
